Biography

Dr Alice Storey is Associate Professor of Human Rights at Birmingham City University, where she is also Associate Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Academic Lead of the UPR Project at BCU. Her research focuses on the UN's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism and international human rights, with a particular focus on civil society organisations, implementation of recommendations, and women's rights. In 2022, she co-founded the UPR Academic Network, which is a global interdisciplinary group of researchers, and she co-edited the first-ever Research Companion on the Universal Periodic Review (Routledge, 2024).

Through the UPR Project at BCU, Alice works directly with the UPR process, submitting stakeholder reports on human rights issues across the world, as well as providing training and capacity-building for governments, civil society organisations, and international organisations. The UPR Project at BCU has been cited as good practice in the UN Human Rights Council and was shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Award in 2021. In 2023 and 2025, Alice advised the UK Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights on the UK's approach to the UPR, and she was invited to participate in a high-level UN event on the future of the UPR in June 2026.
